Duration: half a day
Start from: Mestia
Trail from: Latali
Medium difficulty snowshoeing tour with lovely views and an insight into Svaneti’s culture heritage. The tour starts in Latali Community (the starting point will depend on how long you want to walk: the shorter version from vil. Lakhushdi is about 2.5 hours, the longer version is from central Latali and takes about 4 hours). The first (optional) part follows the road to Lakhushdi with a very pretty three-quarters view of Mt Ushba. From the centre of the village there is a 1-hour ascent to the top of Tanghili hill. The trail goes through meadows and then through forest with glimpses of Latali, the Svaneti Range, and the Great Caucasus. The final point is Archangel’s Church of Tanghili with amazing 12-13 century frescoes by two local artists. There is a picnic site near the church. You return the same way.
This snowshoeing tour can be combined with a culture-heritage visit to 3-4 more of Latali’s medieval familial churches with beautiful 12-14 century frescoes, medieval hammered silver crosses and painted ikons. The visit will take about 1.5 hours and needs to be arranged in advance with the key-keepers. Cost: 50 EUR per group.
We will bring you to the starting point of the tour and take you back to your guest-house by car.
