Combine your visit to UNESCO sight Ushguli with a breathtaking panoramic jeep-tour to Latphari pass. The pass is located 8 km away from Ushguli, near Kala Community. The 12-km ascent will bring you to a view-point at 2830 m above sea level with a small lake and tiny St.Luke’s church. The entire of Upper Svaneti and a big portion of Lower Svaneti can be seen from the pass; the valley of the Enguri river from Shkhara to Ushba; Ushguli and Kala from bird’s eye view. But the gem of Latphari is the fantastic panorama of the Bezengi wall peaks: Shkhara, Jangitau, Katintau, Gestola, Tetnuldi and their glaciers. The visit to the pass will add about 1.5 – 3 hours to the Ushguli tour, depending on how much time you will spend at Latphari. There is a marked trail that you can do around Latphari and Gorvashi passes for about 1.5 – 2 hours).
It only makes sense to travel to Latphari in good weather when there are no clouds.
When you get to Ushguli, we recommend you take the marked tourist trail through the village, starting from Lamaria monastery and down to Zhibiani and Chazhashi. In Zhibiani there is a private ethnographic museum, open most of the time, and in Chazhashi there is a state-owned treasury featuring precious items from Ushguli’s churches and homes (closed on Monday). Your driver will give a call to the monks at Lamaria to open the church (if they are at the monastery at that moment) and to both museums.
