Duration: 5-6 hours
Start from: Mestia (drop-off and pick-up included)
Trail from: Mazeri
Price: 180 EUR (2 riders + guide)
Our driver will collect you at your hotel and take you to village Mazeri at the foot of Mount Ushba. The horse trail leaves the village eastwards and follows the Gulichala river uphill. You go through an old deserted settlement with ruins of Svan houses and towers. A little further on Archangel’s church of Guli stands (12th cent). You continue higher up until you arrive at the little shepherds’ huts that are open in summer when cattle is out in the alpine pastures. This is the closest you can get to Mount Ushba in winter (unless you are on a ski tour) and the highest panoramic spot accessible in winter on horseback (appr. 2500 m). Excellent views of Becho valley, the Great Caucasus and the Svaneti range. The horses cannot continue further, but if you like, you can take a 1-hour walk along the river to get the best views of Mount Ushba. Return the same way.
