Time: half a day
The driver will take you first to see St. George’s church of Lakhushdi. The building has been restored from ruin, so there aren’t any frescoes, but this little church holds one of the best collections of silver items: ikons, vessels, altar crosses, etc. After this you will set off to Tanghili, which is located on a high hill above Lakhushdi, and you will need to walk all the way up. The hike will take approximately 40-60 min. The path is not marked, but it is rather clear, going up straight through meadows and then entering the forest on the left. Either your driver or a local trekking guide will accompany you to make sure you find the church. Most of the way goes through a shady forest, lovely at any time of the year. Those who decide to make the effort will be rewarded by one of the biggest impressions of Svaneti: a tiny church consecrated to the Archangels stands hidden in the forest on top of the hill. Inside it is decorated with stunning frescoes of the late 12th century. The frescoes are extremely well preserved and show the work of 2 local medieval artists of distinctly different style. Bring a torch to see the frescoes, there is no electric light in the church.
