Culture heritage of Kala

Three lovely churches to see in Kala: St. Barbara’s (9-10th centuries, with bright colourful frescoes and 2 of the most revered icons in Svaneti), Archangel’s church of Iphrari (early 12th century) and Lagurka monastery. The last are decorated with frescoes attributed to Royal Painter to King David the Builder, Tevdore. The monastery  is located on a high hill, so you will need to hike a little to get there. This is the most sacred place for Svaneti, the church is devoted to the martyrs Cyricus and Juliet, the patron saints of Svaneti, and treasures a collection of ikons as large as the main Museum in Mestia.
