As close to mountaineering as trekking gets. A beautiful mountain sprawled over Mestia like a gigantic eagle, Banguriani is covered with forest and flowers. At the plateau (3000 m) meadows give way to rock, snow and a feeling of complete freedom.
Banguriani is not the highest mountain in Svaneti, its height is 3800 m at the summit. But it is a very beautiful one, and the trekking to Banguriani plateau at 3000 m is as close as trekking gets to mountaineering. This is a very long hike, with considerable elevation change. In order to do it in one day you need to be in good physical shape. You return the same way as you go up, so you can turn back whenever you want. For some reason the tourist authorities have not marked this trail. If you are an experienced trekker, you will find your way, but actually this is one of the few hikes where we recommend hiring a local guide. The confusing part is the turning from the lower meadows into the forest – you need to arrive at the big forest path that goes up from right to left and emerges from the forest in the upper alpine meadows a little to the left of the ridge. Once you arrive at the alpine zone, you just need to walk on the ridge to the very top where the grassy part finishes and rocks start. The plateau will be on your right, but the best view is actually at the top of the ridge a few meters before the plateau.
